Sightlines

—————————————————————————————————————————————

Have you ever wondered why you can enter two separate homes with exactly the same square footage and one of them seems smaller than the other? It’s all about the “Sight Lines”.  Whether you’re seated in a room in the home or standing in a door way, if the sight lines are blocked by a door or perhaps a wall, the home will have a feeling of being smaller.  That’s why at Stonemill we pay so much attention to the sight lines in your new custom home.

You don’t need any skill or tools to check the sight lines in any home. Simply look at the floor plan and draw a line with a ruler and pencil.  Begin at the middle of a doorway and follow a line to several different focal points within the home.  Take note of whether the line is stopped in the room you started or is it able to pass through several rooms.  Will the line meet a featureless wall or will the sight line give you a nice view of the window, fireplace, or the yard beyond?

Then check the sight lines from various sitting positions in the home. What will you see from the breakfast table? The family room sofa? From your bed as you read the Sunday papers? As you move through a home, it’s far more interesting to get a preview of what’s to come with subtle hints and intriguing clues of the spaces beyond than to be cut off from the rest of the home.

Next go through the same proceedure to check the sight lines from several sitting positions within the home.  What will your breakfast table view be?  How about the sofa in the family room?  You’ll even want to check the sight lines from your bed to ensure a pleasant view while you relax in your master suite and read the morning paper.  It’s much more interesting to get a preview of the various rooms within your new home giving subtle clues as to what lies ahead in the spaces beyond than for the sight line to be blocked by a wall or other sight obstruction.
